My Fear

A few weeks ago I was out sick from work, just miserable. I had been down for days and I was just feeling well enough to read my e-mail and look at facebook. There, I stumbled across what appears to be an old video of a talk given by Jiddu Krishnamurti, one of my favorite author/philosophers. He was asked the question "Who are you?" which he quickly realized was a poorly veiled attempt to actually ask, "Who am I?" His answer brought me back to this blog that no one sees. In short he said, "you are a part of the story of mankind".

I had nearly forgotten how Krishnamurti's book 'On Fear' had blown me away. I have to admire someone whose ideas are simple but so huge, even life changing to others due to their unique perspective. People get so caught up in their myopic, self-indulgent day to day life and focus on it as true reality. It requires a measure of strength to look at the earth and it's people in the context of the universe. It makes us feel small. Guess what? We are small!!! And what's so wrong with that?

Why do so many people have a childish need to feel like the center of the universe? Are they spoiled? Psychologically weak? Perhaps they are hesitant to be a grown-up and think for themselves? In the work I do I see many many people who see themselves as victims because of a poor life situation. Poverty, unemployment, drug addiction, etc. Rarely do I hear anyone take responsibility for their circumstances. They instead look to the government to solve their problems like children seeking assistance from a parent. I hear things like "What do they expect me to do?" when they cannot afford health care or healthy food or even when they make the same poor life decisions over and over expecting a different result. I want to ask "What does who expect you to do?" You are an adult and guess what? It's up to you to seek the answers to your problems because (shock) no one else cares. It's that simple. If you think the government will eventually remedy your situation or some god will save you, you are doomed to stay right where you are until you die. It's really that simple.

So, back to the question "Who are you?" You are a part of the story of mankind. Hundreds of years from now will humans look back at our time and wonder why people were so blind and inept or will they see that we broke free of the lies of government and religion and independently left our world much better than we entered it?
